Morning

So I just picked up a second hand D7000 and a 17-55 2.8 Nikon for a very reasonable price (couldn't pass it up to be honest) every thing is in great condition cosmetically and the body has done less than 2k accs, I do have a slight niggle with the lens and after sleeping on it I am starting to worry! The lens works perfectly and has no obvious damage to glass or case, shots come out crystal clear with no signs of dust or fungus etc....the zoom ring however when at 17 gets really stiff but eases off when getting closer to 55, I don't really want to have to return it as it was a good deal but is this a major issue or is it an easy repair? Or worse still have I been done up like a kipper?

I'm assuming the zoom ring is meant to be smooth throughout the zoom range then?

Yes. Mine was splattered with mud from a rally car once and some of it worked its way into the zoom mechanism and i feared the worse. Miraculously it cleared itself and it was back to being as smooth as a babies bum.

Definately worth getting it fixed though imo. Well, providing you're not too deep in financially.

I really enjoyed my D7k and 17-55 setup. Was ace.

Thanks minnnt, I've done a bit of Internet searching and it looks like a common problem or its meant to be like that! I need it for a wedding in two weeks so might get a quote to service it after that, I'm assuming it won't wreck it if I continue to use it? It may even slacken off a little

Yes it was a very common problem on both the 17-55mm & the 24-70mm,have a good play with it to see if it losses up a bit :)

Just out of interest, has anyone had this problem repaired and know a rough idea of cost?
