I know one is for crop and one for full frame. Thats ok because I have a D300 back. Im going to get one if these lenses so which one is better?

I thinking maybe 17-55 on D300 and keep my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 on my D700. Ill probably get a long prime as backup but its more important that I make good use of my sigma prime and it will be used mainly so thats why im thinking keep it on my D700, remember I shoot 80% of my work with it.I love it (when it finally gets back to me).

would be inclined to say 17-55 as 24mm maybe to wide for you on a crop body

i found my 24-60 or 24-70 sigma not wide enough for certain shots

Or I could have the 24-70 on the d700 and 50 on the D300 but if the image quality is basically the same I think id rather do it the other way round, also the 17-55 is cheaper and a bit smaller.

I recently changed from Canon to Nikon, so I can't really talk about IQ for the lenses you mentioned but what I can discuss is focal lengths.

I shot the 24-70L on a 50D body, for weddings etc and I was always struggling at the wide end. I now have a D300 with a 17-55 and I find it gives me a lot more freedom - I don't miss the 55-70 range.

If your just looking for a lens to use on a crop body I'd say the 17-55 would be great

Yeah im pretty sure 17mm on crop will be wide enough. I know it might not be for everything but im so used to using a 50mm for everything im sure ill be fine. Ill get a few more replies and then I think ill ask for one in the wanted section :)

I would be inclined (assuming you have the money) to go for the 24-70. Its great on my d300 as well as tde d700 and that way you've a lens you can easily swap between the two cameras and you're future proofing you're lens set up. The 17-55 is a great lens, but unless you're always going tyo keep a DX camera then its a bit limiting

To be honest even after getting my D700 ive always regretted selling my D300 and I cant see myself selling it for a couple of years.

i would go 24-70, since if the d300 fails, the 17-55 will be useless to you. for the moments when you need more wideangle, you can swap it onto the d700

I have the 28mm AI-S if it fails which may not be ideal but I did fine with that and the 50 at the lasdt wedding. Id also much rahter have the 50 on the D700. What I really want to know if actually how the lenses compare with each other.

The 17-55 will work fine on the D700, however at 5MP in crop mode.

Luke it may be worth looking out for a used 35-70 f2.8 for the D700, around £250 great value for money.

Hi Luke,

Sorry - I don't have the 17-55 anymore to shoot an identical shot for you, which makes it a little difficult, both are great lens though.

Both shot are straight out of camera, no processing

If you pm me an email address I'll send you RAW files to compare properly

I'd have thought as the D700 is your main camera, the 24-70 would have made more sense.

No because I plan on shooting with the 50mm as usual and that would be best on my D700, slightly long on D300. I shoot nearly everything with my 50mm.

One thing though I have just realised is if I have the zoom on the D300, if f/2.8 is the max apeture I am going to have to up the iso and the D300 doesn't handle it as well.

Hi Luke,

I've used this lens on a D300 at iso800 without noise issues and produced shots good enough for the album from it - I wouldn't worry about iso issues

Cheers

If used at weddings I may have to push it up more than that, anyway im not going to worry to much about that. Im sure people coped fine before the D3 and D700.

Fair enough. If it were me I wouldn't think twice about using a 24-70mm on my D700 with the 50mm used for lower light shots. :p

Just to add, my set up is now a 24-70 on my D3 with a Sigma 50-150 f:2.8 on my D300. The 24-70 really is a cracker and the 50-150 isn't too bulky to hang off your shoulder while being an ideal DX focal length to compliment the 24-70 on an FX body.

Yeah that sounds like a good set up but I just love my 50mm so much. If it wasn't so sharp wide open id be doing a diffrent set up for sure.

Of course but having two cameras that I love I want to utilise them both. I don't like changing lenses unless I have to.

just to throw a spanner in the works - rather than a 50mm and a similar ranged zoom, wouldn't you be better off with another prime in a range - say 85 or 105. Sorry stirring now

Hugh

in a perfext world I would love a 24mm f/1.4 on the D700 and a longer prime on D300.

it would be good - but you could get a sigma 24 1.8 and a nikkor 85 1.4 for the same as a new 17-55 f2.8

do you mind me asking why you'd put the 24 on the d700. To me its too wide for portrait shots, which is 75% of (my) wedding work.

Cheers

As the D700 is full frame I suppose it would make sense to put the wideangle on that body.

to a point, but to me there are other consideration. I like to use my 'best' camera the most, and some of the qualities of the d700 seem like a shame to use just for wide angle shots.

I use a 24-70 and 50/1.4 most of the time at weddings, and the 24-70 get much more work. For that reason alone I'd have the 24-70 on your D700.

So the 24-70 gives you more flexibility. Stick that on the D700 as your main body/lens combination and use the 50 when it's needed. You can change a lens in 10 seconds.

the more you chagme lenses the more you miss shots.

That depends entirely on what you're shooting. If you're in a fast moving environment I'd say that you'd be missing loads of shots by shooting at f:1.4 and the focus being slightly out. If you're that concerned about not missing shots then shooting for a deeper depth of field is going to help you more than anything, in which case the 24-70 on your D700 would be better.
