Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 versus 24-70mm f/2.8...

Have both and used both, both V good but I have to give it to the 24-70 in IQ. I think its the best zoom lens I have used. the 17-55 is just slightly behind but not much.

The lowest price for
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
IS that I could find so far is here:

I've seen a test online where they were head to head and the 24-70 is meant to be better.... I used the 17-55 on my D300 and the images were superb, couldn't fault them, but never used the 24-70 on that camera.

When I was on DX bodies, I contemplated the 17-55 vs. the 24-70 but IQ gave way. There isn't much to the casual eye, but being a pixel peeper I kept looking and could see the difference.

I've subsequently come to love the range of the 24-70 on DX bodies.

Cheers Scott and Wail, I really like my 17-55 but I'm just wondering if it's worth making the upgrade sooner than later on the off chance I decide to go FX a wee bit down the line

What about the "beast" Nikons 28-70mm f2,8

I asked nearly the same question as you regarding the 17-55 & got replies mentioning the 24 & 28-70 f2.8... Then ended up getting the "beast"

When the time was ripe for me to buy this f/2.8 AF-S, I decided to be prudent and go with the long term viewpoint in mind. Hence why I went with the 24-70 instead of the 17-55. Practicality was my main concern.

There is a reasonable price difference between these two; but, if you amortize that difference over the expected life-span of the lens then it becomes negligible

if you might go ff in the nearish future and don't mind spending an extra 300ish dineros then go for the 24 if you can deal with the change in crop

that said, i've had both and think they're both great, not much in it at all

Hold on...

In this context, that phrase could have dual meaning:

1) That I am gullible for believing that someone seriously believed the spam.

2) That someone is gullible for believing the spam and buying two 5DMKIIs.

I have never actually attached my 24-70 to my D200 ........ I quite fancy getting hold of the 17-55 for the D200 but they are just too expensive. Might look for Sigma's alternative. I'm using an 18-55 vr at the moment.

The 17-55 2.8 is a brilliant lens. Focussing speed is quick and super sharp.

If you don't go with the 17-55 AF-S, I'd suggest the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8; I had the pre-VC one and that was amazingly sharp, and at a fraction of the price of the AF-S.

Personally, I have a serious ego problems, it's attached to the gear I use :p, so I tend to stick with Nikon whenever I possibly can; but that Tamron was amazingly sexy, great colours, bokeh, and relatively light-weight.

Know that feeling .

these guys know what they are talking about. and the 24-70mm is the winner!

Personaly I think of FX vs DX is like stopping down the lens, if your working close the the optical axis of large elements then they have to be of good quailty otherwise the lens will be unusable on an FX camera, That being said your paying for optics your not using,
