Nikon 18-105 kit lens upgrade

I am using a d90 with a 18-105kit lens, I have other lenses but focal length wise it covers most of my needs with a bit to spare each end.
I am however looking for something faster with better IQ, older af d or af g lenses are a possibility as my next camera upgrade is may be FX but is most likely to be a D7000 unless there is a significant advantage for portraiture in one of the low end FX cameras.
Looking at £100s not £1000s
Suggestion please would be vary helpfull
 
The d7000 is a dx the d700 fx. A 24-70 f2.8 springs to mind, but until you go full frame its not very wide on the d90.

Thanks, I used Exposure plot and 90% 0f my images are between 25mm and 85mm excluding all the crop- facture thing so ideally would like to cover that range, af-s I can live without d90 and d7000 both have camera af motors,.
I think it is unlikely that I will go FX the best I could afford will probably not have much advantage over a D7000 (dx)
 
If you're not going to go full frame then a full frame lens really won't be wide enough.

From Nikon the 16-85 would be the obvious choice although it may be a tad pricey.

The problem with upgrading from the 18-105 is that it is already such a versatile lens, good range, sharp enough and it has VR. Besting all of them in one lens will take a bit, maybe the 18-200 gives you a bit more range, a metal mount and focus distance scale (not that most people use them) but not much else.

Something like a Tamron 17-55 will give you better IQ, constant f/2.8 but not the range.

You could go for something like a Nikon AF-S 24-85, the older non-version can be had for under £200 and it is a good lens but not that wide and doesn't have VR. The new version has VR but probably not worth the extra money (ca. £450).

On the cheap you could get the Nikon 18-70 which has great IQ, good build, faster than most kit lenses (f/4.5 at the long end) but no VR. Cheap though.

If you are not going fx i wouldn't go with the 24-70. I usr a tamron 17-50 f2.8 is is a cracking lens and a bargain at under £300.
 
Looking at 2k tops for lens to cover 25-85mm ,f2.8 would be good and a body, as it is likely to be the last upgrade for a few years the body need to be a newer type that will cover d7000 IQ and ISO performance
 
Thats a healthy budget. I would be tempted to go full frame with a d600 or d700. With the Sigma 24-70 f2.8. Or if you are buying a grey import you could afford the d600 and tamron 24-70mm VC. Thats just my opinion i'm sure others will have there's.

I would be temped to go FF as well,if you look around the D600 is starting to come in at a good price,then maybe the tamron 24-70mm :)
 
On the D90 I have the tamron 17-50 f2.8 and the samyang 85 f1.4. Covers a great range and the samyang just produces great results! Looking to see how it performs on the D800 tomorrow! Thoroughly recommend the tamron. It's my go to lens on the d90.
