NIKON 18-200 MK11 owners look in please

I've only primes as I'm a bit of a sharpness junky (wish I wasn't but hey...) but I need the wider angle of 18 and some zoom without having loads of primes and changing lenses, the newer 18-200 mk11 seems to fit the bill but can some owners confirm its pretty good or avoid when it comes to image quality?

The old one was excellent, the new one is too, but if your a sharpness junky then your not going to like it at 200mm. It has a pretty massive zoom range and obviously there are going to be some compromises built in.
I really enjoyed my 18-200 and accepted its limitations, but it was my best used lans and with a bit of thought can produce some excellent shots.
There will be people who knock this lens, but it has a massive following ( especially in the USA) and I peronally think everyone who has a Nikon DSLR needs one of these.

think I can accept the 200 limitations but hoping its good between 18-170 ish
 
I had the 18-200vr mki
At 105 the 105 macro beat it easily on crsipness. And Once I had seen that, I didn't use the 18-200 much ;)

Your choice if you need only one lens, but I prefer the primes (50mm, 105mm) and the only zoom I have is the tokina 11-16. Which give 'creative' pictures :)

I had the 18-200mm vrII , did not like it at all was a bit too soft for my liking. Sold this and bought the 16-85mm, now that is one sharp lens but may not be long enough for you. for me it covers all the range where I shoot. for low light I pull out my 35mm 1.8g
 
Check out the flickr groups with the 18-200mm for examples on a Nikon body.

was that the mk1 version? ie red or gold VR?
 
Thanks all and especially Simon for the link, I think I'll be overall dissapointed and pixel peeping to get a few sharp ones so I think another prime and the 70-300VR will meet my needs, thanks for all the input, will post a thread about a sharp prime under 35mm now.

While it may give OK results on the D70, it would be a waste of space on the D700, so I'll pass, thanks.

It was the vrII with the gold badge with the zoom lock as the these lens have a tendency to creep. By the way the zoom lock is only at 18mm. would have been great if it could be locked at any focal length

ok thanks, thats what I feared:thumbsdown: shame though as a really really useful range in one lens. I had the 16-85 and it was good, some pretty sharp images but overall I wanted a bit more lol, isnt that the way with all togs:lol:
