hello, i have been looking at this lens, i like it because of the range it offers and would like to hear what you people think of it, even better if you have a D5000, is it better/worse then my nikkor 18-55mm vr kit lens???

cheeer people.

convenience is what the 18-200 is some say is is good
my preference would be 18-55-VR+55-200VR or 70-300VR
which would be of better quality than the all in one

Not got the lens but I have the camera............for me at least, i tried using a super-zoom and ended up getting rid of it very quickly. Far better results can be had from two separate smaller range zooms. A super zoom for me is too much of a compromise...it does neither wide-angle or telephoto shots particularly well. As the previous poster says, get either the 55-200VR or even better the 70-300 VR...a brilliant lens and will cost new a bit less than the 18-200.

Yes, those are the two Nikon lenses .......the iQ of the smaller one is very good and its an easy lens to carry around as its completely made of plastic...even the mount. Its normally the lens they bundle with the 18-55 if you buy a two-lens kit. The 70-300 is a different kettle of fish....build quality is MUCH better and while not up to 'pro' standards is way better than the normal 'consumer' range. Its pin sharp and focusses really quickly and with the VR it makes hand held 300mm shots easy(equivalent on a D5000 to a 450mm lens). It obviously has more reach than the 55-200.
I have no experience of the Sigma other than what i have read on here...it is a good lens but the Nikon will be better.

PS have a look on ebay...I got mine used for £300 in mint condition....usually a few to be had on tthere

I've got the 18-55vr + 55-200vr and they are both very good lenses (I think so anyway. :P )

Although I would have bought the 70-300vr instead of the 55-200vr but I couldn't afford it. So if you can afford it I say go for it.

the combo 18-55 + 55-200vr is really a good choice if money matters. They're both sharp, lightweight, and very cheap.

However, if you don't want to change the lenses so often, or you don't like the built quality of them (very poor indeed), and you have enough money, the 18-200vr is a better choice.
