nikon 18-300mm

Been out with it all weekend...absolutely love it! Been carrying it around on the D5100 with a wrist strap for 8+ hours a day, no problem with size and weight. The zoom range is just fantastic.

Whats the IQ like at both ends, does it get soft like most superzooms or have Nikon stolen the march on Canon. Mind you, Canon has had a 28-300 IS L out for a long time and on a 5D body the IQ is excellent.

At the wide angle end there's some red/green chromatic aberration at the edges, which can be corrected in post processing. When shooting at maximum aperture and maximum zoom, the images seemed a bit soft until I realised that some AF fine tuning was needed. After a rough test I dialled in -10 on the AF fine tune, and the images are now quite sharp.

Thanks Eric, if you don't mind me asking what sort of price was it and where did you get it. I've been thinking of getting a Canon 28-300 L but the price is rather steep. Well into 4 figures even for a second hand one. I don't know Nikon lenses, but is there an equivalent range to the Canon 'L' range and does the 18-300 come into that range.

I really fancy having a single allrounder lens and then a couple of specialist lenses rather than a 24-105, 70-200 and another to cover the 300mm range. It would make things a lot easier by not having to keep changing lenses in the field.

It cost me £800 from Carmarthen Cameras (via Amazon Marketplace). But if you're hoping for a Canon equivalent, I think you're out of luck at present. It's a unique Nikon product.
