Hi all

At the minute i've got a D5000 with a nikon 18-55 and a Tamron 70-300.

Next year i'm off to New York to get married and will be taking my camera along.

Because of the wedding, my plans of buying a Nikon 18-70mm and a Nikon 70-300mm this year have bit the dust.

My plan was to upgrade just the one lens for now, which was going to be the 18-55.

Looking around some of the posts on here has made me think of a couple of alternatives.

1. Nikon 18-70mm
2. Tamron 17-50mm
3. Sigma 17-70mm
4. Sigma 17-50mm

I know that options 2 & 4 are 2.8's, but am slightly unsure if I'll need to upgrade to that level. (ie. I'm only a hobbyist and would the extra length be more useful to me than the extra shapness)

Some reviews from people who have these lenses would be nice.

Many thanks

Having f2.8 lenses is a definite advantage and the IQ (quality) is usually better. Having the extra range from 50-70 would also be an advantage. The 18-55 is actually not too bad as lenses go especially the VR model.

The answer is simple :)! Get married in Jarrow and use the money that you save on going to New York to buy a 16-35mm f/2.8, 28-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm, f/2.8 VR II, D3x, bank of SB-900s and a Range Rover to carry it all in :).

Congrats on the wedding, by the way .

That's what I was thinking. Extra range vs quality. The 18-55 VR is the one I have. Would I be better off just sticking with the one I have?

Don't think the wife to be would be too impressed with that.

The 18-55vr is pretty good and the next level up, really, are the f2.8 lenses so unless you are going to that level I would leave it.
