Nikon 18-70 any good?

I have the 35 1.8 and will be getting the 70-300 tamron vc but want something decent but reasonably priced to plug the gap, seen this is cheap but is it cheerful or.good value?
 
It is a good lens, but my suggestion would be to save up and look for a used tamron 17-50 non vc.

I had the 18-70 but sold it when I bought the tamron to use with my d90.
 
Won't need to save up lol, looking for longer range than 50/55
 
Use your feet as the zoom. If you can try out the tamron before you decide.
 
Also worth also looking at the sigma 17_70 f2.8.
 
It was the kit lens sold with the Nikon D70.. It is one of the better kit lenses though. I have one on a D3200.

I am very happy with my one, it is them most used lens.
 
If I still used a Dx body as my main camera, I would still have my 18-70. Great bang for buck.
 
I've changed my mind trying to cover all focal length is something I just don't need so I'll put it towards just the 70-300
 
The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 indeed is a very good lens. I sold it because I've move onto 2 FF body. so all DX lens and body will have to go.
 
It was a very good kit lens, perhaps one of the best sold. Sure, if as many seem to do you compare it to a fixed aperture f2.8 then it is lacking...However if you compare it against other multi-zoon multi-aperture it is very very good.

I've recently picked an 18-70 up to use on my D7100. I'm pretty disappointed and under whelmed with the performance of my copy following a trip to Croatia, a lot of soft images despite fast shutter speeds in good light, certainly it leaves a lot to be desired wide open. I'll be donating mine to my lad who shoots with a less demanding old D40 and returning to FX for my travels. Of interest I rate the images I captured with my V1 and its 10-30 kit zoom higher than the D7100 & 18-70!
 
Disappointed for you..... I think you must have a faulty example :(

It truly was/is a peach of a lens - it even received rave reviews in it's time. It's not a lens I'd be keen to remove from my armoury!
 
I have had this 18-70 for some years and I agree that is one of Nikons best kit lenses which has always lived a bit under the radar in appreciation terms given that they are readily available in decent condition around the £80-£100 region. Admittedly I do not use mine anymore, that is not really contradictory as it sounds, I just prefer my 16-85 and primes but my 18-70 is a keeper and slumbers happily in my bag.
 
I think as Barry says, I have a poor copy, I picked it due to the reviews I read and not needing anything too fast. for the time being I'll stick with my 35mm F1.8 which thankfully is tack sharp!

Sadly, people sell stuff for reasons other than 'it's surplus to requirements' :(
 
Can't add to what has been said. I still have mine too and use it, a cracking lens, works well on all the bodies l have owned,
currently a D300 and D7100
 
Same as Mark (005269) for me. Read all the reviews and was dissapointed with the end results on a D7000, so sold it shortly after. Replaced with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 which I found excellent on the D7000.
