i need a good lens for my holiday, but also as a generaly lens for aroundabout. basically a lens to replace my rubbish D50 kit lens. right now i have a 18-55 and a 70-300. i would like something to cover the 18+ but i dont think i need the 18-200 and might be a bit big to lug around with me places.
i will pretty much be using it for a lot, some portraits, some landscapes, some biking etc etc

so is this a good lens? any other i should look out for?
on a bit of a budget btw, as in, need to pay for a car and insurance and im 17...

thanks!

thats probably the best choice then. You could consider a Sigma 17-70 HSM as well though it would be slightly more.

Use my 18-70mm for magazine work and optically it's brilliant. Build quality is excellent and CAs and flare are well controlled

thanks. i have heard good things about it but iv seen it as a kit lens for the D70? or am i getting mixed up?
im going to keep my eye on some of these i think.

I've found it a very competent little lens and ideal for holidays.

Coming from Sony and not yet being up to speed on all the Nikon fit lenses.

Is the AF-S G 18-70 the one you are talking about here ?

It is a kit lens, but a damn good one. Great optics and fast AF. I paid £100 s/h for mine and it is superb. Especially stopped down 1 -1 1/3 stops (as most lenses are really). Can't go wrong as far as I'm concerned

Edit:
Reading that back it sounds like I'm saying it's not good wide open... it is! (or at least as wide as it does go). It just gets even better.

Its probably Nikon's best value zoom lens.

It was the D70 kit lens and its really far too good for a kit lens (Nikon cheapened their kit lenses considerably after that).

I never really appreciated the lens when I got one with my D70s in 2005, but having tried numerous alternatives.. I appreciate it much more.

Its superb on any DX camera... other alternatives would be the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 Di or Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-f/4. However both are much more expensive...
