Morning

does anyone use this lens for macro work?

any comparisons with the Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR?

or with the 105mm plus the TC20Elll?

when I get too near I scare the bugs away - must be my after shave!

thinking about getting one rather than the 105mm f2.8

I have this lens, but haven't had it long enough to have been able to test it fully .... and also have the Sigma 105mm f2.8(and a 55mm f 2.8 manual macro lens)... I don't use a teleconverter, however I do use an achromat on my 200mm f4 lens, which is taking some getting used to... also, I don't do a lot of bugs... I quite like the lens though, but need more time with it
Where are you based Bill?.

I had one. Traded it in a 2 years ago because I found that after initial enthusiasm macro work just was not grabbing my attention.
It is a very sharp lens. The front element is deeply recessed which helps keep it shaded. It is fairly heavy. If bugs are your thing it will let you get macro shots without getting too near and scaring them off.
I would be surprised if a 105mm + a TC20E111 would be as sharp as the 200mm.

If you can keep an active interest in macro the 200mm will be a supeb tool.

To add to Doug's reply.... yes, it is sharp, and I didn't think it was heavy...

Thanks, been looking for reviews, but there are not many on the web

Thanks Lee,

I live in France, but get over to Hampshire about 4 times a year …… not back until Oct

I'd have a look at the Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO OS lens too. The Nikon 200 really needs an update.
