If by micro-contrast you mean MTF levels at high resolution, that's not what produces 'pop'. That is high contrast at lower resolution levels around 10-15 lpmm rather than at 30-50 lpmm that you can't even see without pixel peeping. However, if you have high micro-contrast then it's a fair bet that you'll also have high contrast at all resolution levels.
I'm not one for MTF charts. The Zeiss look better, that's good enough for me.
It's not really anything to do with MTF charts, but very much to do with MTF theory which is fundamental to understanding lens sharpness. It's also the driver behind why larger formats always perform better than smaller sensors, given a similar pixel count - even with the same lens.
What an image looks like is good enough for me too, but it does sound like the 'pop' you're describing is not micro-contrast, but contrast levels at the other end of the resolution scale.

The Zeiss has the better ability to differentiate between smaller details of similar tonal value, so it would be the micro contrast. It's more than just a high global contrast.
My 24-120 f4 was the only lens i took to Venice recently and attached to the D700 performed admirably IMO....it was certainly wide enough at 24 to capture everything i wanted it to in the tight back streets and was long enough at 120 when it was needed ....for me a great lens with few compromises
The only issue i have is one of lens creep when dangling from the BR R7...any one else having the same issue?
Is there any chance of a TP for adults forum?

Not at all, I'm pondering a D700 + 24-120 combo at the moment and your (and others' in this thread) post was very helpful indeed and much appreciated.
