Nikon 24-70 f2.8 VR coming soon? & More

Nikon getting it wrong again.Make a 24-105 f2.8 or a 24-70 f2. VR is a waste of time on a lens like that.

Nope it isn't. As a Canon user (this is irrelevant here though) I'd be very interested in owning one. I am not 100% confident shooting at 1/50 for example due to some blur and raising ISO means more noise. Of course there is good old tripod, but if image isn't important enough I'd happily fall back on IS.

200-500 5.6 is a fantastic idea imo. I've always thought some long f5.6 telephotos (zoom or prime) would fill a huge gap in the market between consumer zooms and the pro telephotos that cost as much as a nearly new car.

I've been considering the current 24-70 recently so will be keen to try the new one in the hope it either offers more, or brings the prices of the current version down!

And the lifespan of a VR lens compared to a good old (and more compact) manual focus one is ....?

Have you seen the price in Japan, under £900 equivalent, and i see its the return of the E series

Eh? Do you know what the "E" in the name means?

Obviously not,i was hoping it was a return to the lighter E series of old,as ime old now and could do with lighter lenses, please enlighten me.

If you mean the the E that is on like the new Nikon 400mmf/2.8E FL ED VR I believe the means electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism, this means it is only compatible with D4 series, D3 series, Df, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D300 series, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Well your still the bearer of some good news,it may not be a move to lighter lenses then but at least it will work on my V2 and most likley any future 1 series.

Surprised by some of the negativity on here about the 24-70. Sounds like an obvious move by Nikon. A lens that seems absolutely core to the Pro market and their current one is about 8 years old. In the the interim Canon and Tamron have both released excellent alternatives. I bet it won't be cheap though!

On a side note, I really love this range of 1.8g primes that Nikon are churning out at the moment. 20, 24, 28, 35, 50, 85. All beauties (I assume the 24 will be no different). Could quite happily fill a bag with those! Now where are the 100 and 135...?

Will be interesting to see how it compares with the Tamron/Sigma 150-600, which is obviously a greater range and cheaper in some forms.

The 200-500 looks very compact. Surely that estimated price is a little on the low side when you compare it to the other two price projections.

I saw it at $1300 estimated so sub £1000 unless it gets the UK-Hike.

Does seem cheap in comparison to the new 80-400. Hope the price is correct and look forward to the reviews.

I wonder if the 200-500 will take a 1.4 TC, as the combined combo would still AF on the bodies that allow f/8.

I believe the new 80-400 takes a 1.4 TC, which is f5.6 at the long end, so hopefully the 200-500 will be a constant f5.6 and take a 1.4 TC.

I heard a rumour that the 24-70 was going to be smaller and use PF tech. Seems not sadly!

As a Nikon shooter I Bought Canon 7D2 and 400 f5.6 for my foray into wildlife/birds. This 200-500 may be enough to let my Canon stuff go and buy d7200.

The 200-500 is twice the weight of the Canon 400, and its centre of gravity is further from the camera. It might not be very comfortable hand holding.

Thanks Stewart, much to ponder.

The 200-500 is remarkably cheap (relatively speaking).

I love the concept of the 1.8G range of primes but they're struggling to match the price of the equivalent Sigma 1.4 Arts, so it seems like a missed opportunity.

True, it's a tough one given how good the 24 and 35mm Sigma lenses are. I've just bought another Sigma 35mm but might pass over both the 24mm lenses for the Nikon 20mm.

I think we wont know if the price is low or not until we know what level of IQ the lens can give. I suspect they will not want to make their more expensive long telephotos redundant. If IQ is as good or better than the 200-400 then it will be a very good deal indeed, I'm betting it wont be but I would be delighted if I'm wrong
