Have the chance of obtaining a Nikon 24-85 f2.8 from a family friend. Anyone use this for portrait work ?

Already been advised on here to look at a Tamron 17-50 2.8 or 28-75 2.8 as I don't have a massive amount to spend at present.

Any thoughts anyone ??

you mean http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/2485afs.htm or the 27-70 2.8?

if the latter, it is a standard professional lens that is fantastic quality.

if the former, the tamron 17-50 2.8 is very, very good, but a bit short at the long end for some portrait stuff really.

How much is he looking for? You may be better with the 17-55 on the D70s crop sensor if you need to go wide at any point. I've not noticed any issues using the 24mm end of my lens (only had it a few days right enough).

The Tamrom has a 2.8 through out the focal range which is handy in low light situations.

It's not a lens i've heard much about. The Tamron gets some great reviews and pics i've seen with it are very sharp (i very nearly bought one but snapped up the Sigma 24-70 2.8... have you considered that?) Non HSM ones can be picked up for around £260 and it's 2.8 throughout the focal range.

We used to use those. A while back, maybe 6 years ago...
Apart from the variable aperture, they're pretty good with a 'useable' macro facility.

Personally for portraits I don't think F/4 is too flexible. It'll do fine I'm sure but I like to soften the ears and blow the hell out of the background, so I'd say 50/1.8 or 85/1.8 (or the 1.4 versions if you can).

Alternatively an 80-200 2.8 used at the long end will give equally shallow DOF.

Have a look at the sigma 24-60 f2.8 as our frends above says, will give you a 36-90 range on a cropped sensor.ideal for groups and head and shoulders, could be the best studio lens ever
