nikon 24mm 2.8 or sigma 30mm 1.4 ?

Ok i was all set for the nikon 24mm but then saw the option of the sigma.

Which one is better?

Ive read reviews that state the nikon is as good optically as the 24-70 2.8 and has no distortion at compared to the 24-70.
My main shots for this lens will be portraits, general walkabout lens and groups of people at parties i photograph at.

24mm seemed to be the perfcet choice but is the 30mm any better and if so what would be better...

Any reason you have have discounted the Nikon 35mm F/1.8, I'd probably prefer that for what you shoot than the two lenses you mention.

I figured 35mm would be a bit much for group shots on a crop sensor?
Is the 35mm a good lens?

The DX 35mm is sharp and contrasty. If I got another DX camera it'd be the first lens I bought.

I think i will take your advice on that as its about £100 second hand.
can always give it a go and if not get the 24mm giving me a decent range as i have a 50mm already.

The 35 1.8 is a really great lens and I would rate my D90 + 35 better than my mates 50d (maybe 550d) and 30 1.4. They both take great shots, but the nikon feels a bit more contrasty and it is certainly bigger and heavier. Plus the price difference is great.

The 35 may be a bit long for group shots though, depending on the size of the room for the parties and the size of the group. If you're talking about 6-8 people in a small room then forget it. You'd be better off with the 18-55 and a SB-600 (which combined wouldn't be much more than the 35). For general walkabout I really like the 35. For single person portraits I prefer the 50 1.8.

i bought this lens and used it today.
Cant say i like it much. Doesnt suit shooting groups at all.
Going to take it back tomorrow and use that money plus the sale of some other lenses and get the 24-70 2.8 which i used at a shoot tonight.
Another photographer lent it to me and i have to say its absolutely stunning. The images are flawless and ive fallen in love with the lens

I use the Nikon 24-70 on my D7000 all the time now. It never comes off. I have the 35mm 1.8 as well but never use it as the 24-70 is so good. Even though its a full frame lens, it is superb on a crop body - you won't regret getting one (apart from the weight)

yeah i thought primes would be fine for me but they really dont suit my type of photography. They really limit you. and the 35mm was a bit of a pain in the backside to be honest.

plus if i get the 24-70 it makes it easier to upgrade to a secondhand d700 when they hit the market more.
