It's mostly academic as I don't have 1300 quid to spend on this lens but I've seen some images taken with this lens and I just think it's amazing. I'm thinking about renting it from the lenses for hire guys for the time we're away but I hear it has problems working correctly with the D300 and D700, due to the in-built flashes not letting the lens shift or tilt fully? Has anyone any knowledge of this lens and if there are any compatibility issues I should be aware of?

Maybe I can help. I don't have a D700 so I don't have any actual practical experience of this issue, but Nikon's support web site has some notes here.

When I get into the office I'll dig out the manual for this lens and see what it has to say.

The manual for the lens isn't explicit, unfortunately. The lens was released before the D700 existed, so there's no mention of it in the manual.

However, for other cameras with built-in flashes, the manual warns that you can get your fingers caught between the lens and the flash when tilting or shifting. There is no suggestion that the tilt/shift range is limited.

Sounds good to me. Ken Rockwell is obviously full of turds again! I'll be in touch closer to the time, but plan to hire one of these bad boys out for the Scotland road trip :)

Well Welly ;)! We meets on here now! I can tell ya it works perfectly well on the D300, had no probs with the tilting, it does touch the bottom of the flash but that is at it maximum tilt! Although, yes, the metering is out! As it is a manual lens, you might aswell just shoot in full manual anyway, mint lens this thing is!! Nice toy!! WHoooop! Just waiting for a bit of sun or some kind of interesting weather so I can leave the house!

I have both the 24mm PC-E and the D700 and they work great together.
Really a fun lens you can use for just about anything in that 24 mm range.
This is the best wide angle lens I haver ever owned.
