Hi All,

Advice required. Has anybody used this lens Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR NIKKOR? If so is it any good at 300mm.

Was going to treat myself to the 70-300mm Nikon 70-300mm 4.5-5.6G VR AFS IF-ED lens which does seem to get great reviews and is I believe pretty crisp/quick at 300mm

Obviously there is a difference in price but is the 28-300 worth the extra £350 ish cost?

I would use the lens down to 28mm but need it to be fast focus and crisp at 300mm ( lots of panning shots)

i had the 28-300 and sold to buy the 24-120.
I dont know if mine was a bad copy or not but i found it to be
positives
light, good zoom range, VR, colour rendition.
Negatives
Bad IQ, very soft, build quality was very plastic, distortion.

This is a review which i feel gives a good review of the lens positives and negatives, although the review is actually for the 24-120 so you have to read through it.

I would say if you are just looking for a light walk about lens and IQ is not too important then it is fine, obviously it is meant for a FX camera so probably not the best lens on a D5000
 
Looking on DPR there seems to be a lot variance in the 28-300's as some of the lenses seem to be softer than others. I don't have the 70-300mm to compare it to but I would expect that lens to be better at 300mm as I don't find the 28-300mm strong full zoom plus I don't think the 28-300mm is a great choice for DX as you're not getting the same versatile zoom range as you're losing.

I've been extremely pleased with my 28-300mm, I simply don't take the 24-70mm/70-200mm out with me on walks so it's really against the GH1 + 14-140mm for me which the D700/28-300mm betters.

Ok,

decided against the 28-300 and sticking with 70-300mm Nikon 70-300mm 4.5-5.6G VR AFS IF-ED. I've hired this for the weekend a couple of months ago and have been pleased with the results so better the devil you know.
