Nikon 28-300 lens ? suitable all rounder ?

28mm on a crop is a bit too tight for a walkabout. If you do care about some wideangle look for superzooms starting at 18mm (tamron 18-250/270, sigma 18-200 etc..)
I was hoping for a 36/48mth option, had a few big bills in and an emergancy roof replacement recently !

Don't forget that all-in-one lenses make compromises.
The 18 mm - 200 mm might be a better choice as it is a DX lens, two thirds the weight and gives a wider fov. At 300 mm you may well want something that does not have the limitations of an all-in-one.
But it really depends upon what other lenses you have and will use, as well as the types of shots you want to take.
(I was convinced that I wanted the 28-300 to do for me on a FX body what the 18-200 does on my DX camera. But then I read about the distortion at either end of its range of focal length and decided I would stick with a wide prime and other lenses suited to what I intend to shoot.)

I have one and think it is a very usefull lens as an all rounder.
Edit. The 28-300 is an FX lens so I don,t think it would work too well on the D300 as it is a cropped sensor camera. Though I will stand corrected if I am wrong. I use a 18 200 DX on my D200, maybe that one would be better for you.

I use one on a D3, not as quick to focus as a 70-200 VR11 with a 2x extender but about a million times faster than a 80-400. The results have always been fine in my opinion but it is not going to be very wide on a crop sensor, i would guess adding a 70-300 to your existing lens would be a good alternative though
