Nikon 28-300 mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR

As far as I can make out it's as good as the DX 18-200, which is fine as a walkabout lens but it's always going to be a compromise.
 
We use one in work on a D3X for about 99% of the product shots we do and it's actually great quality given its wide range. It's not going to be comparable to the likes of a 24-70 or anything like that, but it's really not bad.

If you like I can bring my D700 to work tomorrow and take a few samples with the 28-300 and email you the RAW files to let you see how it performs?
 
I have one and use it for a lot of commercial work I do.Can`t post pics of those i`m afraid.

Good lens though.

I've got one. It's never going to be as good as the 24-70mm. It really wouldn't be fair to expect it to be, but it is very good.
Not the best example, but a car that I have for sale.Shot at 28mm.

It's a good all round lens. Ryan (a member on here, uses mine all of the time at airshows. )

I have never had a 24-70, however, a comparison to my old 28-70:

Not as sharp, but certainly more than acceptably sharp. I have always been sceptical of mega zooms, but this is very good. Of course you will find better lenses if you go prime or ,I suspect, the 24-70, but for flexibility with decent results, it works.

I`ll take it next time I go out doing wildlife stuff and see how it shapes up...........:thumbs:
 
I bought mine on release and been very pleased with it as it gives me a compact walk about option (in comparison to the 24-70mm/70-200mm) and while the image quality isn't as good as the 24-70mm, I think it's still pretty good and the AF is quick and quiet. Previously my D700 stayed at home a lot of the time as the 24-70mm/70-200mm were too heavy for me to carry around for general shooting and there was potential miss shots on lens changes so I stuck with the micro 4/3 GH2 + 14-140mm which of course the D700 + 28-300mm can easily outperform.

Thanks for this post, in some discussions recently there's been some claims the 28-300mm will be unusable on the D800 but if it works fine on the D3X I'm sure it will be ok on the D800.
