Nikon 28-70 2.8 - Play in barrel

I bought a Nikon 28-70 2.8 AFS from a used retailer a couple of months ago. It seems to be developing what I would describe as play in the barrel. The part that I mean is the cylinder that holds the front element that moves when the focal length is adjusted. It seems to be a little loose in the main lens housing. Maybe 0.5mm of play or so all round. I also think that the zoom control doesn't feel as smooth as other lenses I've tried and also feels a bit loose.

The lens is guaranteed and the retailer in question is happy for me to send it to them for them to send out for repair/inspection but as this will mean I'm without the lens for a few weeks, I wanted to check that this behaviour isn't normal? The last thing I want to do is send the lens away if there is nothing wrong with it. At the same time, if this is the onset of a problem, I'd like to get it sorted before it's out of warranty. Anybody able to shed any light?
 
I've got this lens. Can't say I've noticed any play on mine, haven't looked for it tho'. But the zoom should be silky smooth.

I'm having my 70-200 repaired because of sticky zoom...£375....send it back.

Thanks. Funnily enough my problem is almost the opposite in that the zoom ring feels very slack but doesn't quite rotate as smoothly as you would expect. It just feels like something needs tightening to be honest. Think I'll get it sent off though, I don't fancy a bill like that!
 
my was all good except one thing. When i rotate to 28mm the CPU don't read 28mm and it give me a stupid focal length like 38 or 50mm ....... When i turn it to 28mm then increase the focal but a little (like 29m) then the CPU reads the data fine.

No idea why it does it but it doesn't effect optic so i will use it till it die and get it repair or replace.
