Nikon 28mm f/1.8 G

I would have loved this lens to fill my focal length gap, but at that sort of price I might aswell just add a bit more cash and get a s/h 24-70.

Completely different lens. The 28 will not fill the gap the 24-70 will, and vice versa.

Heh. For a full frame lens with good IQ, pick any two of fast, wide or cheap.

The 85 1.8 is £450, and that has no aspherics, no nano coat, is easier to design and will sell a lot more.

AFAIK 28 is between 24 and 70. Perhaps numbers aren't a strong point of yours.

You've clearly not understood what I wrote. If I want to fill the focal lengths between 24 and 70, I either buy a load of primes, which would include this new 28, or a 24-70. The gain of 1.3 stops of aperture is negated by the lack of zoom.

Not understood? I wasn't being hostile.

24-70s tend to get used when there's going to be lots of switching between FLs, when fast focus is desired, when superfast apertures aren't necessary and when weight and bulk aren't considerations.

The 28mm is almost certainly going to focus slower, can't zoom, but provides a small, fast, well corrected 28mm. The times I want a 24-70, a bag of primes isn't going to cut it unless I have a gopher carrying 3 other bodies with the primes ready to go ;). On the other hand, a 24-70 isn't going to cut it when I'm indoors in low light and not looking to impose on people around me, and don't need 29-70 or 24-27.

It won't stay at £620. That's the RRP. Once it becomes widely available it will probably be £450-£500, maybe even a fraction lower.

One thing that caught my eye is the huge manual focus ring on the lens. It's much bigger than the MF rings on the recent 24mm f/1.4 G and 35mm f/1.4 G. Are Nikon thinking this lens might be particularly desirable for video? Or is it just a case of making it big because they had the space and nothing better to put there?
