Does anybody use the mark 3 version of Nikons 2 x tc, specifically with a 70-200 and /or a 300 F4?

If so, could you give some examples shots or your experiences in how the set up performs please.

I`m fully aware of the F8 AF and the loss of two stops, just want to know how it works in real world experience before any purchase.
 
No. All my stuff is Canon!

Ive owned a couple of copies of the MKIII Ade (unlike the numbnut) used with a 70-200mm f/2.8 and a 400mm f/2.8 VR, not overly impressed, AF speed is good but just lacks a little in the IQ dept, needless to say i dont own one anymore, i find the 1.7x to be a much better option.

I`m primarily thinking of using it on my 70-200 Joe, looks ok for that.

Gary, I am concerned about using it on the 300, the 1.7 and 1.4 I have work ok with that, not convinced if the 2x will give decent enough IQ on that lens.

Suppose I could save some money and stick to the 1.7, decisions, decisions.

If you already have the 1.7X I don't really know why you'd bother with the 2.0X.

I quite like the idea of the 140-400 F5.6 if used with the 70-200.

Granted, I can put the 1.4 on the 300 and have a 420 F5.6, but,when i`m in the bird hide, the prime is a bit restrictive if anything big lands.

The 1.7 works well with the zoom:

I actually use an old 2.0 on my old 80-200 f2.8 Nikkor. It's OK, but obviously not in the same league as the 400mm f2.8 VR prime for IQ.

To be honest mate if i were shooting static subjects like that bird and i needed extra reach id look at getting a crop camera, obviously if youre shooting BIF etc then you need the D3S

Jeez, you mean like going for a d300 again.............:D

The things i`m thinking of are fast movers like the peregrines, trips to Scotland and the like Gary.That is what I got the D3s for. I generally use the D800 in the hides to be honest,but it is hard on TCs.

Autofocus and high ISO is just farkin awesome Gary, simply brilliant.
 
Read multiple cases on the 300mm f/4 Nikon ( AF-S Version ) with the TC-20EIII and had ago with it myself, and had a play with it myself and it really isn't any good only for static subjects as focus is poor IMHO. Best stick to the 1.7x mk II on the 300mm f/4.
 
Yeah, that is the impression i`m getting from reading up on the combo Joe. Think i`ll stick to the 1.7 and use the D800 when in the hide.

That's the thing with 36Mp. You'd might be better with less glass and crop to suit. It isn't like you really need all those Mp!
 
Spent Friday & Saturday using my D800e in this format - using a 70-200 vr2 & 2.0 111. Honestly, at F8, its 'ok' as long as the shutter speed is high..
 
I use a 1.4II and 2.0III on my 300 2.8 VR using both a D7000 and D700. The 2.0III I am unsure of, to the point I'm trying to work out when to rent a 500 to see if I should buy one.

The IQ is good enough, okay it not bare lens sharp but it's good quality zoom sharp for sure. My complaint comes with the AF. If your fairly close that last snap is pretty fast and probably good enough for most uses, but once the hunt starts oh dear. The hunt can easily last 5-6 seconds once you loose it and is a pain to get back, I usually end up having to grab the manual focus ring at that point.

Just get the Sigma 120-300 and be done with it. Yeah the IQ may be a little short of the Nikon 300 f2.8 but the zoom is fantastic for using from hides.
 
I have one and have found it disappointing on my 300mm f4 compared with the x 1.4TC
I can get reasonable hand held shots with the x 1.4TC but am finding it very difficult with the x 2
But I tend to shoot at too low a shutter speed anyway and need a D4S so that I can use very high ISO to cope with my shaky OAP technique

PS - I didn't realise that "you two" disrupted other parts of the forum - I must be a bit more adventurous!
