Nikon 300mm 2.8 MKII focus problems

Hi all,

Bit of a strange on here...

Bought a s/h nikon 300 2.8 for my d200. Have used it both with and without.a.kenko 1.4x tc and seem to be suffering from loosing af on it every now and then. It will just stop autofocusing conpletely. Yesterday it stopped working.while i had the lens rotated in portrait mode so unlocked the collar and rotated the lens round and it worked. Then i played around.with it and managed to get it to not work when the collar was locked, then i could undo the collar and it focused, how weird!?!

Does anybody have any ideas what could be causing this? I love the lens but if i can't fix the issue it will have to be returned.

Lock the tripod collar while on a pod and lightly turn the camera from side tio side, is there any slack in the mount, does camera and lens "jiggle" a bit.
 
I can tell without doing the test that with the tc on there is jiggle yes, there was on my old 300 f4 but never had any problems.

Will see if there is any play without the tc on later after work.
 
If theres even slight wear in the aperture lever it can lead to the dreaded "Fee" error but that usuaklly wont let you even fire the shutter, have you tried changing the AF/MF switch to full time AF, if so try it on combined AF and MF

Try with another body

Didnt you just buy that lens a few days ago on here.

Yes bought off here last week. Ive spoken to the seller who has been more than helpfull but i just.wondered if i was overlooking something silly that would mean i don't have to return the lens.

I can fire the shutter when the af stops working. Currently i have the switch set to full AF. I did try it on the fuji s3 when it wouldn't focus on my d200 and it didn't work on that either, without the tc that was.

It's a pitty the lens itself is wonderfull
 
Tried all of the above, and managed to stop working on the D200 without a grip on and without the tc attached.

Put the lens straight onto my S3 Pro when it stopped focusing on the D200 and....worked straight away.

So it seems there is some problem between the D200 & the lens, as the lens worked perfectly according to the seller on both his bodies prior to me buying it, and now appears to just struggle sometimes on the D200. Major headache!
