I have just bought a mint second hand Nikon 300mm AFS D without the tripod collar for a very good price. The collar has since turned up and the seller has offered it to me for £50. Does anyone have any experience with the nikon collar with this lens as I have read bad things about it. Should I go for the Kirk collar?

Ian the Kirk one is better, smoother rotation, and as it touches in two places is more rigid.

If you buy the collar at £50, you would still need a Kirk plate at around £50, how much is the Kirk collar?

To be honest the problem with the original Nikon piece is blown out of proportion, but the Kirk part is the better of the two.

The Kirk collar is about £170

IMHO the collar "problem" is just a way to sell over-priced replacements.

A cork or empty film canister put under the stock foot will solve any of the alledged problem with the Nikon collar.

I've shot with the 300mm f/4 AF-S - with a Kirk foot, and also the stock and never seen a wobble problem, including 300mm / 420mm landscape shots in the danger zone.

Thanks for that, I will buy the Nikon collar from the seller of the original lens.

never heard of the problem, what is it?

The original flexed slightly apparently, it was then said that Nikon had improved the strength of the casting and stiffened it up.

I never noticed the issue with mine.

Bjorn Rosslett had a one man campaign going on the issue LINK
