Has anyone any experience with the Nikon 300mm f4 AF-N as there is a lovely copy for sale at half the price of the newer 300mm f4? I wondered if the AF was a bit slow on this version compared to the newer one.

Af is slower, also slightly different optical configuration however still a lovely optic.

Thanks Martyn. I noticed he only used it on film cameras I assume that it will be a little faster AF on a D300 as I want to use it for wildlife with a TC.

Fair point, the D300 will spin it around at a good rate, I would go and post the question on Fred Miranda, I bet someone over there has tried one on a D300
 
I bought one to use with my D300 for motorsport, but the AF was just too slow, I'd reckon slower than the 80-200 AF-D, to be of any use to me. Optically lovely, but no match for an AF-S lens.

You'll also need to watch which tc you put on it, I don't think any of the Nikon ones will fit and with the likes of a 1.7 or 2.0 Kenko you may lose af altogether...

Thanks guys. It looked like it might be a nice compromise but its looking like I will have to save a bit longer and get the newer version.

Save up for the f/2.8 AF-S, I had mine up for sale, but when I went out to take some test shots for an interested party I realised I couldn't bring myself to part with it......
 
I wish I had the patience to wait for a f2.8 but even secondhand they're way too expensive. I think the f4 version will suit my shooting needs ok and with a 1.4 or 1.7 tc will be fine for wildlife. You never know it be my turn for the lottery this week.
