Nikon 300mm F4 used with TC's?

Morning,

In the next few months I will be getting a Nikon 300mm f4 and a teleconverter. Now, my question is which TC to get? I'm thinking either 1.4 or 1.7 and wondered if those of you who have used both could let me know what you think about the IQ difference between the two.

I've used both with mine and really can't see a difference. Both will hunt a bit more to autofocus in lower light, but on bright days they're about as fast as the 300 f4 without a TC.

And the TC-14E I now have is as good. Have to go to work now, but any of my recent shots you see are with the 300 and TC-14E combo

For a more affordable option, the Kenko Teleplus Pro DG(X) 1.4 is, by all accounts, optically the equal of the Nikon TC 1.4. The build is probably not as good. Pity they don't make a 1.7 as well.

I use a Nikon 1.7x or a Kenko 1.4x - both work just fine, no problems at all.

Obviously as said above, when the light starts to drop then it does have a struggle but in normal daylight, no problem at all.

The 1.7x does lower the IQ to some degree, but its good enough for most things providing you then don't go silly and start cropping to 100%. The only time I've thought "unacceptable" was when I took some bird photos on a crappy overcast day then cropped to pretty much 100% and all of the feather detail had gone.

My normal "prey" of bike racing works just fine :thumbs:
 
Thanks guys, excellent stuff all round. Like you John I'm planning to rent one from LFHire over Easter along with the 1.7 I think and then if all seems good I'll get my own in April (bonus permitting).

Hi again Andy :) I know this is an old thread but thought i'd wake it up.

I've not long got a Nikon 300mm f4 and am trying to get my hands on a 1.4 or 1.7 tc. Had a look through your recent posts & couldn't find a mention of you getting the tc so just wanted to be nosey :D How are you getting on with the lens? I love mine, my best investment so far i think!

I'm hoping for a response to my WTD thread on here so it may happen sooner than my birthday in 2 weeks! I need to get some portrait shoots in now to help the bank recover from this months spends :gag:

Stef, I use a 300 F4 with a 1.7, in decent light it is superb. A light and cheapish way to get to 500mm.

This taken today with a D700. Slightly cropped and the light was grey and dull.

For f4 I use the 1.4 the 1.7 may be ok but you need good light

The 1.7 is better on f2.8 lens

The 1.4 is left attached to my 300mm.

I get what you're saying straycat, I will probably use this more for static birds when in the hide & without the t/c for BIF.

I've gone for the 1.7, maybe next birthday I can wangle a 2.8 :lol:
