Hi,
Just asking which is better? as I can get the f2.8 for around £300 more but just wonder if it's any better in sharpnest as it doesn't have VR. I have searched on here but can't fine much on it so any info would be great.

which version of a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 can you get for £300 more than an f/4??? The NON VR version is going for around £1800 second hand.

It says 300mm f2.8 AFS II I can get it for £1200 but in white, but if it's better I don't really mind :) so do you know if it's better? thanks

That lens dates from 2004 at the latest I think - but that is a VERY cheap price for it. The f/4 is under £1000 - and about £750 second hand. The f/2.8 is faster than the f/4 - which is a very good lens - I suspect the 2.8 is better. I'm looking for a VR version.

I saw a VR version got for £2500 on ebay the other day, perfect condition but cant afford it at the moment :( so it's one of these two, I have read loads about the f4 but not much about the f2.8 non vr

The bokeh's going to be better on the f2.8

I'm after a 300mm VR - saw that on eBay but too late! Maybe the next one will be mine!

If it sounds to good to be true..........................

Is it for sale on Gumtree?

It is real lol so I take it is worth it?! As no one has said anything about the 300 f4! :)

I have the f4 300mm and very pleased with it.

Although to get the best from it you will need to use a tripod in wildlife instances. I have some bird panning images That I'll put up here when I get home from work.

Back home now so here goes, first day I used the f4 300mm.

One more for good measure.

The AFS 300 f4 is pretty darned good, the 300 2.8 AFS II is a bit better.

At this kind of level you are talking marginal improvements and as a counter argument you have to ask yourself is the extra weight/bulk going to make it a lens you will use less?

For the convenience of being able to lug it around and pocket it easily when you swap to another lens, I'd go with the f4... besides which, they are easy bits of kit to move on if you've made the wrong choice.
