Nikon 300mm Re-build

Hi All,

Here's the situation. We have three Nikon 300mm f2.8 lens stuck in the corner of the office. All not working properly for one reason or another but none with the same fault. One won't auto focus, one has the camera mount broken off, and not sure what's wrong with the third one at moment.

These lens are around ten years old, and Nikon say they can't get the parts needed to repair them due to their age. What we are thinking is to make one good one out of the three :eek::eek: What I was wondering is if anybody knows of any diagrams available for Nikon lens construction. You know what it's like you strip something down put it back together and always have a few screws left over :cuckoo::cuckoo::help:

I dosen't matter if we fail as they are doing nothing now just stuck in the corner but if we could get one working again that would be great.

Any thoughts on this idea would be appreciated.
 
Sorry can't help, but I've seen a few spare parts for sale on eBay, you might want to search for the parts needed.
Geez, 3 dead Nikon 300 lenses, I am sure Nikon would not like that news to get out...oops it already is!! 

In all fairness to Nikon, these lens were heavily used in a busy newspaper office handled by a number of different photographers. One was dropped, hence the broken mount, sounds like the focus motor has gone in the other, and not sure whats wrong with the other at moment, but sure we could make a good one out of the three :shrug:
 
Another question folks, Has anybody here successfully stripped down and rebuilt a lens (appart from the Nikon/Canon techies that is) and what advice would/could you give.

I've never done a lens before, but I've done some other extremely complicated strip down and rebuilds.

The best piece of advice I can give you is take it slowly, have lots of multi-compartment trays for screws and small components, Take photos at each stage of the strip down so you can refer to them on the rebuild, read the relevant section of the service manual before starting each stage and have it on hand as you perform the surgery, and generally be very very organised as to how you store all the components in the trays. It's also a must to note the location of each screw in the event that a component is attached by multiple different sized screws.

Thanks for the advice Slaphead. Must admit I'm not looking forward to it but if it dosen't work out nothing lost. Just been having a look at some lens repairs on Utube, looks a bit fiddly especially for somebody who has big fingers :eek::eek:
 
Another option would be to list them all on Ebay, I reckon you'd get more than enough back to buy a good working example without all the faffing about....
 
Have you thought abaout asking Fixation or one of the other service centres if they'd be iinterested in doing the job for you? You might even be able to strike a deal where they take the working spares off you.. Also try procamerarepair on ebay.com if you do need any spares as i managed to get a part for my old canon 300/2.8 that went missing 2years ago and they shipped it in 3 days from San Diego

fixed a nifty fifty with a friend once.
Was very simple
undo things in order. Keep bits (glasses for each different screw size)
take pics along the way
re assemble in reverse.
good luck :)
 
I'd say ebay it. The dropped one probably needs a very careful recallibration anyway, so get rid of it. The broken gear is going for too much on ebay recently, I suspect insurance fraud, but that is the buyer's problem, not the sellers.

Contacted other repair centres and were told the same thing regarding the spare parts not being available. :shrug:

Bit of a difference in size :lol: I've had a look on You Tube at some lens repairs on there, lots of screws to remove but it seems once the screws are removed the lens comes apart in sections!! "hopefully" famouse last words :suspect:

Can't ebay them as they belong to the company, all we can do is try a repair ourselves. The dropped one is the one with broken casing around the rear mount. this lens worked fine until it was dropped, so hopefully we might just be able to change the rear casing. :shrug:
