nikon 3100 - what lens for wildlife?

Hi, I keep hearing good things about the 55-200mm nikkor vr lens. Is this compatabile with nikon 3100 which i have, or is there a better lens in the 100-200 price bracket. Thanks for any advice.

Sigma 70-300 APO gets reasonable reviews on here and is within your price range; could also look at the Tamron version....Sigma is better though.
