At some point when funds available i will get a more up to date ff, just out of interest which would you go for low light and portraits using a 1.4. i would use either for solely that purpose but am wondering if getting a ff at a bargain price (though that much older) or a newer aps-c (doesnt have to be nikon, just an example) which would be best ?

5dc is a great camera, used one for professional work for ages
if you can't take good pics with a 5dc the problem is you not the camera
 
You mention bargain, but don't mention a price or budget. Low light and portraits - low light suggests candid available light photography when the subject maybe moving and/or unaware of the photo being taken, portraits suggests posed photography with the subject aware of the photograph and able to hold a pose (and raises the possibility of introducing additional lighting). You mention a "1.4" but not the focal length (critical for portraits), and as no lens will fit both cameras it's a bit vague. To be honest, it's diificult to make out what the real question is - queries like this will tend to get skipped in favour of questions that are easier to answer.

If it's just for portraits, and if the budget includes a good lens, then I'd go for the 5Dc over the D3200 but given its likely age I'd be checking it over very thouroughly and making sure I had enough in reserve for a shutter replacement if needed. But it really depends on the whole budget - the body and the lenses you'll be pairing it with.
 
The lens isnt really part of the question and I do realise they both take different lenses what I'm asking is whether people would go for an older ff or a more up to date aps c but for argument sake let's say the sigma 50mm 1.4
 
Depends on lighting.

But if you're limiting yourself to a 50mm then it would probably be a DX camera as 50mm is more of a portrait length on DX - could be a bit wide on FF.

As said, it sin't a simple answer and depends on a lot of factors.
 
yes i know this and as i said its not about lens,i can work that out later depending on the camera

Ok, well if it was me I would PROBABLY go for a new DX and get some really good glass for it.

The only reason being is that, in my experience (although I've never used a 5Dc), they have much less noise in the shadows which gives more scope for manipulation in PP, especially if you're shooting low light. Don't be fooled by high MP though, it makes no difference unless you're shooting at low ISO.

So, if I understand what you're asking and making some assumptions myself, I'd go for a 16mp DX such as a D5100 or D7000.

I do actually own a D3200 but prefer the images I've seen off the 16mp sensor.
 
Yes thanks I have a 60d which I use for macro and wildlife sigma 100-300 and the 70mm macro but want another body for other things so I don't have to keep changing lenses, budget won't go to the other 5ds or d700 and good glass just yet

I'd personally go for a more up-to-date APS-C (I did, I left Canon and went with the X-Pro1) but I don't really know enough about what you're wanting to be doing.

If you're keeping the 60D then it makes sense to keep to Canon with your second body. And why take so long to pass on relevant information, such as your current 60D? We're not stalking you, we don't know what's in your camera bag already.. .. (and it is relevant information).
 
Hell, if you've got a 60D (and why didn't you say so?) then it's a bit of a moot question - spend your money on lenses.
 
It's mainly for general indoor things where the lightings not so great I find 2.8 on the 70mm not fast enough and too long for many things on a crop
 
In which case its fast wide primes you want, not a new body.

The new Sigma 35 f1.4 is meant to be lovely but after that I draw a blank as I know [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] all about canon lenses.
 
The 100-300 stays on my 60d only comes off for macro so I do all too often the need of another body

A drop of WD40 might solve that problem. Cheaper than a new body as well! Unless you're planning on combining wildlife, macro and portraiture into the same sessions.. .. ;)
 
lol i know its partly laziness but a back up wouldn't hurt either, just in case and i would like to try ff and a 5d would be a cheaper way to start off with.
 
One question does anyone think the 5d is still worth buying (good copy of course) or better to stretch to the ii
 
For £300 odd quid? I'd say it's a bargain! In good light and a nice lens (a good prime for example) it makes for a wonderful portrait camera. I too have often wondered about buying one and a nifty fifty and just using it for outdoor portraits in the summer. It's a great way to get into FF with super IQ. The higher iso may not be as good as some of the current crop (no pun intended!) of APS-C DSLR's or CSC's, but for good condition shooting it will certainly hold its' own.

@MattyW uses one for motorsport and produces top quality images time and time again along with some super landscapes. I don't think he'd mind me giving you a link to his blog...

it is tempting just to see against the 60d which i love i have to say, i have heard even at its highest iso 3200 it will still produce better iq than a more modern crop?

If you can find a well looked after one for good money then I'd give one a go. You can rest assured that you'll be able to get your money back on resale if you decide it's not for you. Have you got any FF glass atm?

Both my sigmas will go ff but I do have a thing for the sigma 50mm 1.4 which would obviously be better on ff that should cover all I need
 
I haven't a thing for sigma but price v performance I find them great value and better/equal to some l's I've tried
