At 35mm around f/5.6 would there be much between them (IQ)?

The 1.8 does display CA towards the edges which although correctable is a little irritating.

Be interested to here comments from anyone with experience of the above lenses.
 
I've owned both and I'd take the prime any day at any f-stop. It's sharper with better colours and flare control. The older glass is okay, but I've found it a bit dull on comparison.
 
at 35, the prime is always going to look better, if for the only reason that it's a far newer design with newer coatings.

The older 35-70 is no slouch, though, and still looks good, albeit with that slightly lesser contrast. and, of course, it looks better than the prime at every other focal length!
 
is good to know, i always wondering that question because i see those older nikon 35-70 f2.8 sell for cheap but i got a 35mm f1.8 already so i don't want to waste money buying something that is not good to me.

It's still a good lens, but as always it is limited by its age and being a zoom.

Yeah I know what you mean, the f2.8 is good and thats why i always tempting to buy one of them but consider i got a 35mm f1.8 and a standard 18-70mm f3.6-5.6 i feel that I don't really need it as much as I think I might, so thats why I always give it a pass on the deal.

being a 35-70 i see no real benifit for me except the f2.8 in that range, but then again is not wide enough for me as a walk around lens lol.

I think I made a good decision to stop my hand from iching lol.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I love my primes but at times feel limited and could do with some lens movement.
 
Mid-range zooms are always a little disappointing as it's technicaly a tough range to produce good glass in.
