Nikon 35-70mm or Tamron 28-75mm

I need a lens for the slightly wider end, was looking at getting the Nikon 24-70mm but cannot afford it at the moment so am considering the above lenses.

Im shooting a 40th birthday party soon so ideally it would be suitable for taking these photos as well as shooting children etc.

Does anyone have both or used both that could give me some idea of which one to go for?

I dont have either of them but I am looking to get the Tamron soon and as a result have been looking at reviews,wherever you look people drool about the Tamron I have even seen it listed in the top 10 sharpest lenses in the world so I doubt you will go wrong if you buy it
 
I have the 35-70 f2.8 ... sharp, slightly more neutral rendering of colours than the newer nano coated lenses, but that is quite useful for people photography.

Whilst not as heavy as it's current versions (28-70 & 24-70) it is all metal so a fairly solid lump on the front of the camera.

I found the mintest of minty 35-70 2.8s I could find, bought it, used it once and hated it. I found it soft and lacking in contrast, as well as the infamous flare issue with this lens
 
Got the Nikon 35-70 2.8, cracking lens. Prefer it to my 28-70 on FX TBH.

i had one as well. simply the worst piece of rubbish i ever owned, AF was terribly slow and clunky, i now own a Tamron 28-75 which is a remarkable piece of kit for the price
 
neither for me i would rather just have a 50mm

everything to gain and nothing to loose

Except 35mm,40mm, 45mm etc etc etc.......:)

Will do, my iMac died on me today so im sharing a laptop with my son atm :(
Am fighting to get "me" time on it!
 
After lots of looking around for a general purpose zoom for my D700 I went for the AF-D 28-105, granted it's slower than the lenses you mention but it has low distortion and 1:2 macro ability plus it's nice and sharp and only £100.

Have a read up on reviews, you might be tempted...

Not received it yet but can't wait to try it!
