nikon 35mm 1.8 dx or tamron 17-50

hi
which of these would your reckomend. i love to take portraits of my grandchildren and lots are taken indoors. i have a nikon d3100
 
Which Tamron 17-50? Thing to look for would be a lens with an autofocus otor built in. Nikon AF-S lenses have this, not sure about which Tamron ones do though, especially without knowing which specific lens we're talking about :)

Should add, my choice would be a 50mm rather than the 35mm, but the 35mm prime over a zoom. But this is dictated by the lenses I already have too. What other lenses do you have already?

I already have the kit lens 18-55 and the tamron 70-300. plus nikon 50mm 1.8 but this does not auto focus and i have real problems manual focus.
 
Go for tamron, then you can put your 18-55 on add and get some money. You will feel the difference after first shots. 35 is a superb lens, but zoom is better. Tamron is more expensive, but in comparison - you will get nice wide angle outside and good zoom for portraits. Also it depends on your need for aperture. 1.8 vs 2.8. Also your bcamera body dont have built in focus motor. So about tamrons. There were three types of tamron lens. It was 2 generations. Second one have VR and all of them have built in focus. The first gen was seperated early ones didn't got focus, but after some time they decided to put focus motor. But both of first gen dont have VR.
P.S. I got both of them and using both but for different situations, both lenses are superb for their price. But if you are really not deep into photography go for tamron.
 
With what you've already got Nikki, I 'd suggest the 35mm which is reputedly a lovely portrait lens. But that'd just be my personal preference of the two.
 
So which one would get as a walk around. I'm going to family wedding in a few weeks and wanted to use it indoors. Which would think would be better
 
Difficult call, 35mm can be a little long for indoors group shots but the 35mm is 1.5 stops faster which will help a lot indoors.

Edit, actually, the best thing to do would be to buy an SB400 and use bounce flash.

Not quite sure what you by this. Very newbie. Would this work on my camera.
 
he's saying the same thing I would. Sell the 18-55 (you'll get 60 quid or so) and put that money towards the tamron 17-50. Just make sure the tamron has the focus motor built in. For a wedding, as a guest, you'll miss the range more than the extra stop or so. That said, the 35 is wonderful. I love mine and wouldn't sell it.

I'd also get a flash for on top too. I have the Sb400 and it is a good step up from the on board flash because you can tilt up 90 degrees and gel/diffuse it easily. It is also a good size match for the entry kit (I had a D40). I'm looking at the Jessops 360afd as a step up for a bit more power and better bounce/swivel.

In your case, I'd get the Tamron, sell the kit 18-xx, and use the £60 or so to get a flash (your choice which one).

Alright. Short version. Get a tarmon but make sure it have built in focus motor. Now I will try to explain as easy as I can.

There is two geenerations of this tamron lens.
First one is no VR. Second generation have VR.
If you will choose to save save money or you dont need VR, go fo first one but keep in mind that first generation early series didn't have focus motor and later ones got that.
So you need first generation made later or second generation with VR.
