hello people, i am after another prime, my 1st was a 50mm for my sony A200 and after getting rid of it i miss it (tbo i did`t use it enough). i have been looking and reading about the 35mm af-s 1.8 and the non auto focus 50mm 1.8.

i would like to use it at work for taking pictures of the food we do, just for my self and my pastry chef. is there anything between the 2 lens or will it come down to personal choice??? at the moment i am thinking the 35mm is the way i should go.

1 last thing, would it be worth paying more and getting the 1.4 50mm from nikon???

thanks

The 50mm is a great portrait lens, the 35mm will just be a bit wider, Nikon also do a 28mm F/2.8 which is quite cheap, I have been thinking about one of those as its a bibt more usable on my D90

The 50 1.4 will AF on your D5000, I personally would probably go for the 35mm as you've got that extra reach, and that's more like 50mm on the crop body anyway. Don't disregard the Sigma 30mm 1.4 though, it's a cracking lens.

I'm in exactly the same quandry as the OP. I've read that the bokeh performance on the 35mm Nikon isn't as good as the 50mm (both f/1.8) despite costing more. I'm going to put one of these on as a general purpose lens (to replace the kit 18-55mm) so need it to be decent in low-light, not too long (which his what, after reading hundreds of opinions, seems to be a problem with the 50mm) and cheap!

What would people recommend?

Depends if you like manual focussing or not, only the 35mm will autofocus on your D40....

the bokeh on the 35mm isn' that bad ;)

though tbf it could have done with being stopped down slightly. Although this was a very very quickly composed shot

I don't think I mind manual focusing all that much. The focusing 'dot' will still be present in the viewfinder, right?

Does look a little soft, you're right. Still, impressive bokeh performance none the less.

I guess I'm asking whether the 35mm or 50mm on a DX crop is the more useful focal length? And whether, for the extra £40, the 35mm is a superior optical product?

Yes, the green dot will still be there, the question is more whether you'll get fed up trying to nail focus at f/1.8 manually

If you've got, say, an 18-55 at the moment try it at 35mm and then at 50 and see which suits your style of photography best

the 35mm just feels like a damn fine lens, I'm about to head down to the beach in a bit with my 35mm attached, I'll see what I come up with and if there are any good ones I'll post some here

ive just bought the 35mm f1.8 and love it. havent used a 50mm so cant coment, although i am tempted to gamble 50 quid for a second hand one on ebay.... for some reason the past couple of days they have been going really cheap...
