Nikon 35mm f1.8, 50mm f1.8 or the 50mm f1.4

It's doing my head in now, and this thread has probably been asked more than anything else.

I've been trying to decide now for about a week which lens to have. They are all the af-s g versions. The 1.8 are pretty much the same price (about 170, depending where you get it from new/used) and the 1.4 is about 100 quid more. But the price isn't the problem. I've got about 300 to spend so enough for either.

I'm on a cropped body (d3000) so understand and that.

I mainly shoot portraits off my family, but obviously a bit of general too.

The 35 I think may be a little short, as I'm not keen as wont be the subject I dont think with me getting in their "comfort zone" by getting close to accommodate the shortness of the 35mm. Plus is there chance of the "rounding perpective"?

I've already got the 50mm 1.8d and I like the way the portraits frame.

So I think what it comes down to in the battle of the fiftys. Which? And is the 1.4 really worth the extra cash?

I've heard the 1.4 is another amazing lens, the bokeh is cleaner than the 1.8

i have 50 and 35 1.8
50 doesn't work for me indoors, hence why i got the 35

if you get on fine with the 50mm go for the 1.4
 
How close do you find your getting to get a head and shoulder shot? Any shape distortion from getting close?
 
+1 for the 50 1.4 - superb lens all round and fantastic for portraits on a cropped sensor
 
I was undecided about 35 or 50 on the D300 so I kept my 18-70 at each focal length for a couple of days to see which I prefered. I now have the 50 f1.4 and love it. I would go for the 1.4 over the 1.8 if you go for the 50 to give you that extra bit of light if needed. I got mine from here for about £170 posted.

Yeah 35mm means I have to be a foot closer for a head, shoulder shot, but great if I want full body well of a toddler

With a quick moving toddler I would like a 17 -55 f2.8 or ultimately a 24-70 f2.8, but even with second prices being more than my system I'll have to make do with what I have

Well spotted - that would be the af-d. If that is the focal length you want though I still think it is worth the extra.
