Small, sharp, not very well balanced on a big camera. Are you having problems with yours?

Had this a couple of months. Out yesterday on the Giants Causeway, lovely light, and using handheld at 1/160 or 1/200 with f11 or f13 and I'm sure quite a few of the pics are 'soft'. At infinity things are not sharp in my opinion. I was on manual focus and hyper focal distancing so everything should have been sharp to infinity. Will try to post a few in the next few hours. thx, mere

What's it like on autofocus? Or a tripod? Never found mine soft, but I rarely use it much above F8, and tend to use it more between F2 and F4.

TBH at around F/10 every lens and definitely primes should be sharp.

I agree, but as the OP was having prob`s with that range etc ... I don`t usually use it beyond about f4 most of the time ...

Was considering purchasing this 35mm to go with my new D600 as I really like using the 24mm on my D7000 which gave a similar field of view.
Might have to save and go for the Sigma 35mm if the Nikon isn't up to much!

The 35/2 I had was lacking in contrast at f/2, things got better at f/2.8 but not amazing. It was fine at f/4, but I never liked the rendering of the bokeh on this lens, very distracting I found.
Don't forget that beyond f/11 your results are going to be deteriorating due to diffraction, not sure of the D4 sensor spec but certainly on the D800 people were reporting diffraction softening at f/8-f/11

I also have the Sigma 35mm, and it's a lovely lens, but it's massive. I've not done a side by side 100% magnification comparison of image quality at comparable apertures, because TBH, I've got more important things to do with my time 
Superficially, the Sigma images look 'better', but the only reason I've not sold the Nikon just yet is because it's a small, light discrete lens that goes well on the smaller film bodies that I still use.

Yeah the size of the Sigma is off putting as is the cost over a used 35 f2 but it does look a cracking lens!
