Nikon 50 1.8 vs 35 1.8 | Your thoughts

I name the Nikon 50 1.8D as the best value lens any budding Nikon photographer (and I reckon canon too) could get. Fast, light, great quality for as low as £60/70 on the second hand market.

But what I'm interested to hear are your thoughts if you've used both the 50 and the newer 35. What differences (other than the obvious fov) if any have you seen? Mainly on crop bodies but I'd love to here from anybody who's tried both.

If you're talking about the 50 1.8AF-D then the obvious difference is the ability for them to focus on lower range bodies - the 35 can, the 50 can't.

Of course, there is the new 50 1.8 AF-S now, but that can't be had for £70
 
I use the exactly two lens you mention.

Nikon 50mm f1.8 AF-D and Nikon 35mm f1.8 AF-S

I admit i use the 35mm more because of the FOV but optic quality to me both pretty much similar. I don't shoot them wide open but when i do they still sharp
 
That's right. The d versions sorry!

Would you say the newer, the 35, has the edge?

I'd say you'd need to shoot them fully in the extremes and then pixel peep to say one has an edge. Both are great lenses. The 50 is a great buy if that's the FL you need. The 35 is a steal comparing the performance at that focal length to your other options at that focal length (35 f2, 24-70, 35 1.8).

Of course I'm talking dx here.

I have both and maybe its just the field of view but I much prefer the 50.
 
I replaced my 50mm 1.8d with a 35mm 1.8 AF-S recently. Image quality is pretty much identical but the 35mm is much more usable on a crop body indoors.
 
Thanks to all so far.

I can't compare them because I've only owned the 50, and I love it and recommend it. I don't use it so often but still it has a place in "my heart" and bag :)

The 35 does interest me, at least for a play or two.
