I decided to buy the cheaper version for a change as the 1.4 seemed a little underwhelming whilst reading the reviews. Generally, for the money, it's pretty damn good. What I have noticed from two flared shots into the sun is a load of artefacts, looks like allot of marks on the front element. What I find baffling in that is that these shots were taken close to full aperture so nothing would render if that were the case.
It's coupled with a D750 which has been back for the well known flare problem, not that mine ever did show any of the symptoms. I'm a bit limited at the moment to check with other lenses having my one arm in a sling so can't make any real world comparisons. How does the lens perform for others directly into the sun, obviously there's no nano coating on the cheap version.
