Bought a used copy of this lens and it arrived on Friday, on testing it it became apparent that there is a clicking noise when activating focus, there's a clicking noise both when focus is started and when it stops (i.e. I take my finger off the AF-on button). Switching VR off stops the noise so the culprit is pretty clear, just wondered whether this is normal or whether I need to look into returning it? I have 2 other VR lenses and neither of them make this noise... Have attached a link to a video which illustrates the problem.

Generally when VR is activated there will be a 'whir/click' noise, it sounds a bit different to my 300 & 200-400 though - can you discern it actually working?

Yes it was from MPB. just did a test at 1/30 and I'd say the VR is working.

No other noises other than the AF adjusting in AF-C mode.

Well I'm beginning to think it's not meant to be, having agreed with MPB that I'll return the lens for repair next week, I took advantage of today's stunning light to give it a try with some BIF. It works okay on its own (although not as many 'keepers' as I'd have expected) but when I tried to use the TC17 with it, the viewfinder was so dark it was virtually black and the camera wouldn't focus. It's definitely not an incompatibility issue as I used the same combo last week for some moon shots with no problems at all so I know it should work. Any ideas what could be causing this? All very frustrating.
