hi - i have a 50mm 1.8 and am thinking off selling it and buying the 1.4. theres obviously a large price difference between the two but im prepared to sell & buy if its worth it. 90% of my photography is natural light outdoors with children. i do a little studio work in the winter aswell. ive seen some amazing captures with the 1.4 and was looking for some expert advice as to whether its worth the swap? i particularly like the high key wide open use of the lens to create lovely bokeh and softness together with great light all round. hope you can help. thank you. reg's Jen

i loved my 1.4 when i had the D700, and some of my favourite shots were with that combo.

I'd say go for it if you can afford it.

Here are a couple of my favourites....

In fact after looking through some of my pictures i'm tempted to buy the same combo again (D700 / 50mm F1.4D!!)

thanks chillimonster....these are really good. love the DOF in them. im tempted to go for it.....perhaps i should put my 1.8 on the classifieds here or ebay!

wow, does the 1.8 and 1.4 make that much difference
what's the price on each?

there's discussion about the 35mm too

in terms of light there is, or so it appears. you can get a new 1.8 for around £90/£100 (new) and ive just seen a really good deal for the 1.4 @ £219 which is mega cheap. see link below, ive never used this company before so not sure how good they are!

IIRC you will not get quite such a narrow DOF with the D300 as you do with the D700 which is what these shots were taken with, this is to do with the crop factor of the D300 compared to the full frame of the D700.

It will make a difference however (as DaveC223 mentions) these shots are with a D700 and that has an amazing impact on DoF. Taking into account the DX crop factor I'd recommend the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 (my favourite DX lens).

EDIT: Seeing those pics makes me miss my old D700 even more. :(

There are two versions of the Nikon 50mm 1.4!!
The 'old' AF-D version is cheaper and the newer AF-S version - both have their fans!

Hi

I have recently got one f1.4D. Check the flickr link in my sig for some shots with it.

Note although lovely bokeh it does seem to soften the focus a bit. However at f4 it's very sharp and still blurry.

I plan on using it some more and trying some change of settings.

I did see a 50 f1.2 manual on eBay, dunno if it is still there ***

Tell me about it :(

I'd give my 'spare' kidney for a D700 / 50mm 1.4 / 28-75 / 17-35 (my perfect set-up)

:'( We should set up a support group!

I'll take your two zooms and raise you a Nikon 85mm f/1.4. The 50mm and 85mm would be all I'd need on a D700. :)
