I am looking for a 50mm prime to put on one of my cameras (s2 pro), as I shoot mostly in my studio I will not have much need for the extra bit of speed so is there some other advantage to the 1.4 that will justify me paying out about 2 ½ times as much.
All comments and advice will be gratefully received

im not 100% but I don't think there is anything optically different but don't quote me, what you get with the 1.4 is a motor for non motored bodies plus the 1.4 will probably produce a better shot at 1.8 than the 1.8 does at 1.8.. also as it has its own motor you may get quicker AF..

someone will soon be along to correct me on all that though :bonk:

Thank for the info as I rarely shoot faster than f4 and speed of AF is not an issue the important thing is optic performance so unless there is a differance optically or major build quality issue then I will go for the 1.8 and save the money for something else

The AFS 50mm f1.4G has better IQ than the AF 50mm f1.8D. I had both these lenses until last week when the AF 50mm f1.8D eventually went.

It is not however 2.5 TIMES better but it IS better. I would say that the IQ of the f1.4 is as good as the 24-70 (I also have one of these).

The f1.4 also has a metal body and a lens hood.
