hi

i have been looking for a second hand 50mm prime.
the question i have is what is the difference between the AF-S G and the AF D ?

and which would you choose ?

On a D300 either of these lenses will work very well. The AF-S G lens has full-time manual focus override. On the AF D lens you need to flip a switch first. The AF D lens has an aperture control ring. The AF-S G version doesn't. The AF-S G is a bit bigger than the AF D but still very compact.

I used to own the AF f/1.8 (pretty much identical to the AF D) but upgraded to the AF-S f/1.8 G version when I saw a used one at a good price and then more recently to the AF-S f/1.4 G. There isn't much to choose between them in terms of image quality. The newer f/1.8 lens is perhaps a bit sharper wide open.

The reason I upgraded was to get the full-time manual focus override. Sometimes that can make the difference between getting the shot and missing it. Other than that the only reason to spend the extra on the AF-S G version would be if you had an entry level body without a focusing motor.
 
Hi, The AF-D lenses have aperture rings so can be used on Nikons without apertures set by the camera. The AF-G lenses do not have aperture rings so all apertures are set from within the camera.

Both are optically very good lenses. I use the D lenses which I have found to be superb with the added bonus of being able to use them on my old film cameras. Hope this helps.

i think i will be looking for a G lenses but if i get a D at a good price i wont pass it up ..
