i play 5-aside football in the powerleague in shrewsbury and i was going to have a go at taking some photos of my team. its relatively close up stuff compared to 11 aside so im thinking this lens might be a good option?

what does everyone think? if anyone has got any other alternatives i would love to hear them.

thankyou

Should be good - it's nice and fast for lower light conditions. It may be a little long for close up shots though - maybe the 35mm AF-S 1.8 would be better?

The pitches are well lit, but its the speed of the lens and lowlight performance like you say that i find good about this lens. you may be right about it being a little bit too long but im not sure i can justify the extra £60 for the 35mm version.

i suppose i can always try looking through my kit lens at 50mm and 35mm to see which would be better?

I would say 50mm is very wide for football, I used to struggle with 200mm but that was 11 a side full size..

I think you would need something around 100mm.

Its quite hard to find a reasonably priced, fast lens

Depends what you want to pay really... 35mm F1.8 would be an option if you're really close, or if you're a little further away, 85mm F1.8?

im starting to think more towards a budget zoom but realise they might not be as fast as i want them to be

What zoom do you currently have? If it extends to 85mm or more, just try taking a couple of test shots at the various focal lengths and see what works for your situation.

I have an 18-55 but a friend of mine has a 55-200 vr i might "borrow"

50mm?!!

Use one of the field of view calculators to work out how that will shape up...

I can tell you from practical experience, unless you want very wide angle shots, its not going to be long enough.

Also, that lens is about as slow focusing as it gets, tracking a moving subject thats quite close with it and at f1.8?... good luck!
