Nikon 50mm

If she wants it to auto focus, the 50mm Afs 1.8g is the one to go for (or the 1.4 version if she's feeling flush).

What does she want to use it for? if it's as a general lens then the 35mm f/1.8 would be a better bet, if she wants a head portrait lens then the 50mm would probably be better.

I've got a d3100 and use a nikon 50mm 1.8d. It's manual focus on the 3100 but the metering still works and there's a small circle in the viewfinder that confirms when the focus is right.

I find the quality excellent from the fx lens and it's excellent value at around £100.

+1 on the Nikon 50mm 1.8G, she won't regret it :-) its not much more than the 35mm 1.8G, about 15 quid difference between the two.

Thanks guys, she seen my Niffty on my Canon last night and fell in love with it, she loves the Bokeh! So she's now deciding whether the 50 or 35 is the way to go now :D

Another point to make is that I find I can focus closer with my 35 than with my 50. Not macro, but can give some nice compositions of smaller objects. The 35 is easier to get a hold of 2nd hand too, I have seen quite a few go up for sale in the forums classifieds. Normally for around 120 quid :-)

35mm f/1.8G DX is definitely worth considering
