Nikon 52mm Drop-in CPL for 300 2.8

Looking to purchase a 300mm 2.8 soon, and I've just noticed the insane price for the Nikon drop-in CPL's.

Is there anything out there that's cheaper than the £250 Nikon offering? Feels pretty crazily priced for what it is!
 
My understanding is that it needs the cog wheel that comes with Nikon's drop-in as seen here:

I imagine ND filters etc would probably be okay using that method, but it's frustrating that the CPL needs to be turned whilst inside.

That's the problem, and reason for the cost of such a short production run product. Having said that, you might be able to bodge it and work without the external rotation, bearing in mind that the optimum position is often the same or very similar for a lot of subjects, eg blue skies and reflections off car windscreens in motorsport, with the index mark around the top.

So frustrating! I did wonder about a bodge, seemed a little bit of a gamble though, and that 'optimum' position is often hard to find and when you move as much as I do ends up being a never-ending search! I reckon I adjust about 15 times on an average day.

Appreciate the advice though!
 
I suppose it is too big a diameter for a Cokin type solution at the front of the lens ……. I think that the biggest that they did/do is about 90mm …….. but you never know

presumably you will be using the lens on a tripod most of the time
