Hi all, looking to buy my first zoom lens and have come across this for a great price! Have read some reviews and they are on the whole quite good!

Any thoughts from you guys about this lens or similarly priced alternatives? :)

Depending how cheap you can get the lens for may sway your decision, but for me I would look to get the Tamron 70-300mm VC. I have owned the Nikon 55-300 and for me the Tamron is better and as good optically IMO as the Nikon 70-300mm VR which I have also owned. You may find the 55-200mm too short when you start using it, but it's supposed to be a good lens for the price.

Sam,

I have the Nikon 55-200 VR and it hardly gets used, what do you want to use the lens for?

I bought it to use at the kids sports day, but the quality is not as good as the the 70-300 VR Nikon Simon has suggested. I borrowed a mates 70-300 vr to try and it is a better lens compared to the 55-200, but a bit more money than the 55-200.

Iv just had a look and the Nikon 70-300mm is about £220, whilst the 55-200mm is around £100 in a few places, at this beginning stage of my photography journey I can't justify that price difference between the two. But thanks for the advice, if I had the money I would follow it

Does anyone have experience with the sigma 70-300mm? It's a great price which has me worried!

What do you need the zoom for? What do you normally shoot?

When I started I was the same, wanted a zoom so bought the 55-200, then I wanted a prime or two so bought the 50mm and the 35mm f 1.8. Since I have bought the 17-50mm tamron, the other get no use. I have since sold the primes.

I have had the older Sigma 70-300mm DG APO and for the money I paid it was an excellent lens. IIRC from a recent thread, you have the D3300 and you will need to watch with some of the Sigmas and older Tamron's as they haven't got built in motors and your camera hasn't either, so it will be manual focus only.

Best bang for buck is the Tamron I have linked above. Again watch the Nikon 70-300mm lens and unless it is a VR lens these will not auto focus either on your camera. For £220 you have mentioned is that secondhand or a grey import as it seems cheap.?

I need the reach for pictures of the dog, squirrels and other things as I walk about, with 55mm I just can't quite get close enough to things. I think price for performance the 55-200mm is best for me :)

Thanks for the advice on af motors, could have been a costly mistake! And yeah for that price it was a grey import.

I have ordered the Nikon 55-200mm vr ii for the bargain price of £92 brand new! :)

Can't be bad for that price.
