I have a bonus coming up at the end of the month, and am thinking of upgrading my Nikon 55-200 F4.5-5.6 VR. I'm considering a Sigma 70-200 F2.8. Is the Sigma a better lens than the Nikon ? I know it's faster, which counts for me as I want to use the lens for some indoor sports and maybe portraits, but what about IQ, and will I miss the VR ?

Not sure if I'll sell the 55-200 or if I should keep it.

So, was this a daft question or did it just get missed ?

I may be able to stretch to a s/h Nikon 70-200 VR.....

You lose a bit of zoom at the low end but gain a wider aperture.

Will you miss the VR? Depends what and where you shoot.
Stretch for the Nikon 70-200 VR if you can

I love my 70-200, I have a feeling it is my most used lens. It is always mounted on one of my bodies in the bag.

If you're not going to upgrade to FX any time soon you may want to consider the Sigma 50-150 2.8. It's not quite as long but sharper and generally better thought of than the Sigma 70-200. Cheaper too.

If you can afford it however, definitely go for the Nikon 70-200.

Or just keep the 55-200 if you're happy with it. It's a cracking little lens after all.

i would say depending what you shoot the Siggy is worth a lot of thought.
i had one before i brought a canon 70-200 f2.8 L and loved it, i took some great zoo and air show pics with it which are in my gallery, i sold it to buy the Canon and to be honest it was not £400 better.
I am now going back to Canon from Nikon and have to decide Canon 70-200 f2.8l or Sigma 70-200 and a Canon 50mm f1.4 for the same money?

I know people seem to always be complaining about the sigma 70-200 in terms of sharpness etc but i really dont see the issue, even compared to the nikon 70-200 unless your really pixel peeping i would be willing to bet you couldnt tell the difference between my sigma and your nikon.

The sigma 70-200 is built solid, despite its apparently lack of weathersealing mine has been fully buried in snow several times and i have had NO issues at all with it.
