I'm thinking of getting this lens and notice it's out of stock in a few places... just checking if anyone knows if there is a new version about to come out or anything?
 
Extremely unlikely, I would say. The 70-200 VR II has only been out for about 3 years. That's nothing in terms of the product lifecycle for lenses.
 
Thanks - that's reassuring. Just wanted to check before I bought one! It's a lens I've been wanting for a while. :)
 
They just recently brought out the 70-200 f/4 with newer VR tech. It's half the weight and price. That improved VR will no doubt be used in future for any update versions directly on the 2.8, but can't see them doing it anytime very soon.

If I was buying again [sold off a near new VRII afternot using it near as much as I thought I would] - I'd get the f/4
