Nikon 70-200 F2.8

I had a quick go with a this lens a few weekends ago and have really got my heart set on one. I've currently got a Nikon 18-200VR and a 50mm.

Can someone please persuade me that I don't need/want one :help:

you don't need one - did that help any :naughty:

I really hate mine so you don't need one.

That Help:)

Buy it, now!!!!! I love mine.

I have one, but tbh its a commitment to carry and I ended up leaving it at home on a recent trip. So I don't need one as leave at home lenses don't last long at Chez Andy...

Great optics, but what will you use it for?

Fantastic but heavy (as any long'ish f2.8 glass will be...), that with the 24-70 and the long primes are the best glass Nikon make...

Not helping much am I? :D

You definitely DO need one, so do i, just got a few other things to source first.

Rob.:D

if the lens is that much of a burden to you, I'm sure a new home could be found ;)

Until he buys another :D

Great optic though. I rarely use mine but when I do I'm never dissapointed with the results (except for one corner which is softer than the rest on my D3 but not enough to make me not want to use it, on the D300 it's superb through and through).

I'm also after one of these, or a 80-200 AF-S which as far as I can tell is optically as good (some say perhaps even better) just without VR and missing 10mm at the wide end.

Finding one at the right price is another a different story though...

The Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 VR is a lens i would love to own, but with current prices being what they are ie £1500.

I proberly settle for a Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 AF not very fast & no VR but optically just as good if you get a good copy.

if need/want one easier to carry the 50-150 sigma is a good alternative, fair bit smaller and lighter, otherwise as said id go for an 80-200, cheaper but still sharp as

Exactly what I did, 80-200 until I can persuade someone to part with the 70-200 for a sensible price :shake:

The lens will be used for car photos (both still and motion shots), portraits, and rugby/hockey/tennis/athletics photos.

The more I think about it the more I want one...

For that sort of stuff a late 2-ring 80-200 AF-D will do the job just as well, for half the price....

Agree.

I had one and sold it it, replaced it with an 80-200, for what I do,the 80-200 is more than adequate.Don`t be dragged into the must have stuff...........

Can I have first dibs to buy it back from you please :D

It was a big decision for me to upgrade, optically there's nothing in it, but I needed (rather than wanted) the AF-S and as there were no 80-200 AF-S around (or 70-200s come to that ) at the time it had to be a new 70-200.

Fracster's bang-on though, don't spend an extra £700+ just because someone tells you it's a "must have". Buy an 80-200 at the right price and if you if you find you really do need the extras the 70-200 has, then you'll be able to get most, if not all, of your money back when you sell it on.

speaking of which is there anywhere that sells 80-200 af-d new? ive had a wee look at the usual suspects but havent seen one?

Agreed - I picked up an 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D recently and there is nothing in it optically.

The 70-200 VR is a great lens, but the whole 80-200 Nikon line it derives from are also great.

I'm not knocking the 70-200 VR at all - its superb, but also not really a "must have" when optically you can get the same performance from a Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 Di, 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D or 80-200 f/2.8 AF-S (although an 80-200 f/2.8 is now at silly prices)

(if you want to chance it)

grey imports?

maybe ill stick up a wanted, 50-150 is ideal for me but if moved to full frame would need a dif lens

ah ok!

ive found one on amazon as well.

so i just need to sell my kidney buy a 50 f1.4, then trade my fuji, 35 f2 and a pile of cash with puddleduck for a D700 and 80-200. simple.

I was looking about when I wanted one and decided to look out for a top quality s/h one which I eventually found for £500, it was mint with all the bits, case etc. so I was quite pleased. I am sure you can get one cheaper (the push/pull comes up quite regularly for less) but I wanted the 2 ring which I did get in the end. Good luck with the search it will be worth it

The "two touch" one is the one to go for if buying used.

I would'nt go for any of the older ones unless you can get one at about £250-ish - I've seen earlier AF-D ones go for mad prices (£450+) but the two touch (with a tripod collar) is the one to go for.

Optical performance is one thing, if you are shooting moving subjects then focus speed is king. None of the third party lenses are a patch on the 70-200VR, simple as.
