Hi guys

Having made the decision to hang onto my D300 I'm toying with buying some new glass. I have a 17-55 f2.8 and an 80-200 f2.8 two ring.

I'm heading to Canada later in the year and plan to do some whale and bear watching. Here's the thing - do you think it's worth getting the 70-200 f4 or stick with my 80-200 2.8?

Perhaps I should consider something that'd give me extra range?

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Depends on whether you're happy with the bulk of the 80-200.

If you are then you could get a Kenko x1.4tc which would give you a 280mm f/4 lens which coupled to the D300 would give pretty decent reach.

Alternatively the 70-200 f/4 with a TC would take you to f/5.6 with good VR but an old sensor which isn't great if you underexpose.

I think, probably, I'd just take what you have with a TC.

Fair point. Come to think of it I may have the TC. Best I go look. :D
